Slow start, strong finish

At 700 pages GLACÉ weighs in like a Victorian novel and often reads like one. Too many sentences describe characters eating and drinking or what they are wearing. Descriptions of the locales of the story - intended to establish a sinister atmosphere - become dulled by repetition. Of the three sub-plots, only one was of real interest, and very well done. Still, in the last quarter or so of the book, the "rebondissements" come thick and fast, and the book earned its right to be called a thriller.
