I began this gripping mystery series in the middle and read straight through to the end. Consequently, it was a great pleasure to go back to the first volume and learn the back story on all the memorable characters. The young detective Nicolas Le Floch first meets the King of France and learns something remarkable about himself. The mystery itself is fascinating, and as always, the reader will learn something new about French history and the causes of the French revolution.
