This edition of Le Père Goriot includes an extensive introduction, page notes and and post text commentary by Stéphane Vachon, professor of French literature at the University of Montreal. This places the text in historic context; including cross-references to authors preceding and contemporaneous with Balzac. It also hints at the re-appearance of many of the characters in other books of the Comédie Humaine. This was my first introduction to Balzac. I am hooked.
