Description

Black comedy gem
Candide is one of the funniest books ever written, and I envy you who are about to read it for the first time. Voltaire takes aim at contemporary philosophers' idea that the world may not be perfect, but God made it the best it can be, and any seeming evil has a higher purpose. To Voltaire, this denied the possibility of progress, so he subjects the protagonist to a series of calamities with no clear benefit to make the point that the world is a fine place, but it's up to us to make it better.
